Mario Cristobal has built one of the most respected coaching careers in college football while remaining deeply connected to the city and university that shaped him. A Miami native and graduate of Christopher Columbus High School, Cristobal returned to his alma mater in December 2021 as the University of Miami’s 26th head football coach.

A standout offensive lineman for the Hurricanes, Cristobal helped lead Miami to national championships in 1989 and 1991 and earned All-Big East honors in 1992. Today, he continues to elevate the Hurricanes program to national prominence. Under his leadership, Miami achieved back-to-back 10-win seasons for the first time since 2002–2003 and earned its first appearance in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game following a school-record 13-win season in 2025.

Before returning to Coral Gables, Cristobal established himself as one of college football’s elite coaches and recruiters. As head coach at the University of Oregon, he led the Ducks to consecutive Pac-12 championships, three straight conference championship game appearances, and a Rose Bowl victory. Earlier, as assistant head coach, offensive line coach, and recruiting coordinator at the University of Alabama, he helped guide the Crimson Tide to a national championship in 2015.

Cristobal’s coaching journey also made history at Florida International University, where he became the first Cuban American head coach in FBS history. In just four seasons, he transformed FIU from a winless program into a Sun Belt Conference champion and bowl-game winner, earning Sun Belt Coach of the Year honors in 2010.

Recognized nationally for his leadership, player development, and recruiting excellence, Cristobal has coached numerous NFL Draft selections and helped build top-ranked recruiting classes throughout his career. His impact extends beyond the field through his commitment to mentorship, academic achievement, and the development of student-athletes.

A double alumnus of the University of Miami, Cristobal earned both his bachelor’s degree in business administration and his master’s degree from the University. He and his wife, Jessica, are the proud parents of two sons, Mario Mateo and Rocco.
