“The Cuban Comet” is in the baseball hall of fame of the U.S., Mexico and Cuba. He
was the first black Latin player in Major League Baseball history and the first black to play for the Chicago White Sox which retired his #9 (he also played for the Cleveland Indians). Among his key statistics: Batting average: .298; hits: 1,963 homers: 186 RBIs; 1,023 runs scored. His achievements include nine All-Star appearances, three Gold Glove Awards, and leading the league in stolen bases and triples multiple times and is the only player to have played in MLB in five decades: 1940s-1980s!
