Won Best Cinematography Oscar for Days of Heaven who moved to Cuba at age 18 before going on to study in Rome. Returning to Cuba after the 1959 Castro takeover his two films Gente en la playa and La tumba francesa were banned, leading to his move to Paris where he had a great career leading to his career in Hollywood where he received three Academy Award nominations for Kramer vs. Kramer, The Blue Lagoon and Sophie’s Choice.
