William Navarrete, Cuban exiled in France, studied at La Sorbonne after Havana U. he often writes for Miami’s El Nuevo Herald. His novels La gema de Cubagua  y La danse des millions treat topic of how Eastern Cuba, under the influence of the United Fruit Co., its Quaker schools and Anglo-Saxon discipline produced rebellions and leaders such as Batista & Castro. “Understanding Oriente and the fact that there is where were hatched wars of Independence, invasions, heroic deeds, the founding of the colony and its first 3 towns, etc., is vital if one wishes to understand the complex Cuban history.”
