With a sense of humor and a lot of love for her culture, a 22-year-old recent Florida International University graduate came up with a clever way to decorate a graduation cap that you probably will see only in Miami.

Ana Gonzalez’s “Let’s Get This Cuban Bread” cap — complete with a loaf of Cuban bread glued on top — turned heads at an FIU commencement ceremony Sunday. The phrase is a play on “let’s get this bread,” a slang expression for earning money.

“I’m Cuban. I love my roots and I’m from Miami,” Gonzalez told NBC 6. “I felt like this was the most Miami thing I could think of.”

Gonzalez was standing in her kitchen one week before graduation when she came up how to decorate her graduation cap.

“I just came up with the idea,” she said. “I thought, nobody has really done Cuban bread.”

Her family laughs about it now, but they weren’t so sure it was a good idea at first.

“They were confused,” Gonzalez said, laughing. “Like, ‘you left un pan Cuban in your room! Bugs are gonna come!'”

But the message speaks to a new chapter in Gonzalez’s life. Now she has a BA in criminal justice and a story to tell for the rest of her life.

“When I shook hands with the president, I think I hit him by mistake,” she said. “Sorry if he sees it – wasn’t intentional!”
