Rita Montaner (1900-1958) renowned diva in Mexico City, Paris, Miami & New York’s Apollo Theater “Rita de Cuba” was its most popular artist from 1920s to1950s. Classically trained in piano & as voice for the Spanish operetta genre of zarzuelas, she made her mark singing Afro-Cuban songs “The Peanut Vendor” & “Siboney” by Ernesto Lecuona from her hometown of Guanabacoa. She was married for two years to Xavier Cougat & was a pioneer in Cuban radio/TV.
