Orlando Zapata Tamayo (1967-2010). Cuban mason, plumber, and political prisoner who died of a hunger & thirst strike in protest against the Cuban dictatorship. It was the first time that an opponent died during a hunger strike since the 1972 death of Pedro Luis Boitel. U.S. State Dept. said it was “deeply saddened” & Spain called him “a human rights defender”, while France expressed “dismay” and stated that its government had been lobbying Cuba on Zapata’s behalf. On 2/23/12 the Ladies in White met at the home of the late martyr Laura Pollán upon the 2nd anniversary of his death surrounded by an aggressive regime mob, a situation that goes at each anniversary.
