Laura Pollán (1948-2011) Opposition leader against Castro dictatorship violently repressed by it. Husband Héctor Maseda Gutiérrez & 74 others known as the Group of 75 were arrested in 2003 Black Spring crackdown of journalists & activists the regime accused of taking money from foreign governments.

Pollán soon began appearing outside government prisons where her husband could be held. She soon was joined by wives of other political prisoners leading to the founding of the Ladies in White.  Her Havana home at 963 Calle Neptuno St. became an opposition center hosting literary teas for family of political prisoners. According to the state she died of dengue fever, but many dissidents die young in Cuba’s health system under suspicious circumstances.
