José Julián Martí Pérez (1853-1895) is Cuba’s national hero & precursor of Modernism in literature. After political prison & exile he pulled together Cuban emigres in the U.S. founding Patria newspaper & the Cuban Revolutionary Party seeking Cuban independence from Spain, dying in battle after invading Cuba. His Versos Sencillos were adapted into the song Guantanamera.
