25 Oct FACE: Position on Cuban-American Protesters
October 25th, 2018
Letter to the Editor, Miami Herald
Facts About Cuban Exiles (FACE) is a non-political organization founded in 1982; its mission is to promote and improve the reputation and image of people of Cuban origin and their descendants in the USA and around the world.
On October 17, 2018, a small group of Cuban Americans confronted Representative Nancy Pelosi who, along with California Congresswoman Barbara Lee, a well-known supporter of the Castro dictatorship, had been invited to participate in a Miami rally in support of Democratic Party candidates for Congress. This small group of protesters clearly crossed the line from a peaceful demonstration to a form of harassment that threatens the peace and the democratic process.
As Cuban Americans, we are fervent admirers of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution which guarantees freedom of expression, freedom of association, freedom of the press and freedom of religion; however, we strongly believe that when the First Amendment is not framed in civility, it loses its meaning.
The behavior of this small group of protesters is not consistent with, nor does it represent the behavior of the Cuban American Community in the United States. When force and intimidation becomes the norm, nobody feels free to express an opposing position and so liberty itself is in peril.
